University of Food Technology Plovdiv, Bulgaria

University of Food Technology (UFT) (http://uft-plovdiv.bg/index.php) is an educational and scientific centre in the area of food technology and engineering. The students of UFT are involved in a wide range of exciting areas of study in food science, engineering and technology, tourism, biotechnology, economics, computer and information technology. The high qualification of UFT graduates have helped them to make career as managers of state-owned or private companies, and to become distinguished scientists or prominent public figures.

The achievements of the university as a leading university are the result of joint efforts of specialists in different scientific areas – a process that is both innovative and inspiring. Cooperation with business and other organizations is designed to ensure the convertibility and dissemination of academic knowledge.

The scientific research sector of UHT consists of a central research laboratory with sections for chemical, physical, physicochemical and microbiological analysis; pilot plant for the different biotechnological production; university library; training facilities.

UFT Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s only centre specializing in food and technologies for foods production. UFT is partner in the development of new technologies at the production of probiotics and prebiotics, foods and beverages enriched with bioactive ingredients, methods for encapsulation of bioactive ingredients, organic foods. Many of the developed products and methods have been implemented in food industry.

Mainly specialists from Departments Technology of wine and Brewing and Microbiology will carry out the development of the project KNOWinFOOD. The departments have the necessary research laboratory and facilities for carrying out quality teaching.  The following laboratories are also be used for training and research – Central Research Laboratory of Agricultural University – Plovdiv; Laboratories of Wine and Spirits Research Institute – Sofia; Laboratories of Department “Technology of Beer and Beverages” of Institute of Cryobiology and Food Technology – Sofia; Testing Laboratories of Executive Agency of Vine and Wine in Sofia and Plovdiv; Laboratories of companies  producing wine, spirit, malt, brewing, and soft drinks, Protey-M, Biovet and many more.
